Installing TopSpin on a Windows XP PC or Laptop

Plan A

Read the 272 page Bruker Topspin installation guide and figure out everything for yourself. (You can use this if you want to do anything unusual or have problems)

Plan B

Go for the default setup, usually what you want

This assumes:

• Windows XP SP2 or later (probably works on 2000 too)
• Installation will go onto C: drive

1. Obtain licenense file, “license.dat” from another computer or by request from Facility Staff
2. Login to windows as a user with administrator privelidges
3. Insert the TopSpin CD. Program should start automatically or double click the windows\setup.EXE file
4. Select processing only option (default)
5. Set firewall question - answer yes
6. Make the NMR super user your normal login account and password (that is, use the same login and password currently been used on your computer).
7. Installation of files will then take ~15 min. Add this line "149.171.156.118 boguspc.chem.unsw.edu.au boguspc" to the file host directory found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host. You will need to be an administrator (of your computer) to do this.
8. Copy the license.dat file to the C:\flexlm\Bruker\licenses directory
9. Run TopSpin by double clicking new icon on desktop
10. Select expinstall option
11. Select Installation for datastation (default)
12. Select high resolution option
13. After completion all is ready
14. Select your data directory by using a right mouse click in the left hand data pane of TopSpin
